Deborah Miles, Geophysicist & Engineer:

Miles has a Bachelors of math and geology and a Masters of Engineering of Geophysics and has been a leader, teacher, publicist in her industry for over 30 years. Her in-depth understanding of seismic waves in different materials can directly translate to the study of sound. Seismic exploration listens and focuses on the lowest frequencies.

To manage high resonance and frequency overtones we fall back onto other talks from previous years, namely Strings Theory with Fan Tao and The Acoustics of a Violin with James McKean. Also each Technology Showcase so far: Endpins and wolf modulators.

Lecture and Practical Workshop:

2017 Master Class Talks - Sound Waves

Deborah Miles will provide practical, simple information for a test method at thefoundation of her research. Musicians can use with immediate results.

Recordings on-site to compare to samples she will demonstrate on audio/visual properties of "core sound" of an instrument. Including whether wolf is from instrument's properties or from set-up or accessories.

Furthermore, understand how these facts learned about an instrument can be used to increase sound potential if so desired.  Or if an instrument's potential is inherently limited.  Hear how seismic interpretation using shear waves are used to understand what luthiers are calling compression.

Agenda:

  • Cocktail Hour
  • Lecture by Featured Expert, Deborah Miles
  • Hands-on recording and demo for practical use of Mile's research.
  • Reception

ABOUT THE
MASTER CLASS TALKS
ANNUAL SERIES

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The objective of the Master Class Talks
is to involve members of our string
community (teachers, professional
musicians, and students), to build
knowledge, trust, and an amazing
sound from our local string players.

FAMINE IN A TIME OF PLENTY
These Talks offer an Educational
outreach, public and scientific benefit:
  Invest in our community, promote
research in the field under a safeguard
of our cultural patrimony and provide
feedback to researchers in a safe,
appropriate venue for discussions
to take place.

A FEAST OF KNOWLEDGE
Building on the success of the
October 2012 presentation by Jerry Pasewicz (attendance boomed from 25 to
90 teachers, professional musicians
and students), I have instigated an
annual, free to the public, educational
outreach nonprofit series of
Master Class Talks here in Omaha.
The Master Class Talks Annual Series
is a registered Nonprofit Incorporation.
